In terms of its place in the people professions, Coaching is about striving towards a future state. Counselling (therapy) is focused on the past. Mentoring is working alongside and Consulting is providing expertise. It is important to have that clarity, as sometimes Coaching is used inter-changeably with mentoring and even counselling. But like the other professions, Coaching stands on its own.
Here are some of the services I offer:
Life Coaching
In Life Coaching, a typical process includes:
An initial, Complimentary Meeting. This will include assessing whether you are ready for coaching, by completing a straight-forward 10 point questionnaire.
Once Terms and Conditions are agreed on (see Terms and Conditions) then planning the coaching sessions begins. This involves:
- Completing an Extended DISC Personality Profile
- Undertaking an Extended DISC de-brief
- Completing the WHEEL OF LIFE process to ascertain priorities.
- GROW Goal-Setting Work
- SMART Goals – Goal-Setting Work
- Refining of your SMART Goals
Governance Coaching
As with individual life coaching, Governance Boards need to ensure they are future-focused. It is crucial for their functioning and effectiveness that they commit to ongoing professional development as a Board.
In terms of their functioning, the dynamic around the table is the most crucial aspect. The New Zealand Institute of Directors rates Emotional Intelligence as the number one requisite for Boards. Unless Boards understand how they work (their maintenance functions) then their actual work (task functions) will be very hard work and arguably take longer. Coaching focuses on these.
In terms of their effectiveness, Boards need to be safe places for their members to participate. They need to be places for robust discussion, questioning and debate. For the stake of their stake-holders and share-holders, they must avoid group-think. Stories abound where Boards did not discuss, question and debate sufficiently enough to the point where their directors have found themselves personally, financially liable for their action – or lack of action.
Board Chair Coaching
Directly linked with above, I offer coaching for Board Chairs. As a current Board Chair myself, I am uniquely placed to offer this service, bringing my experience, knowledge and insight into this crucial aspect of governance coaching.
Relationship/Marriage Coaching
As a Celebrant and Minister for over 35 years and someone who has been married twice, I am well-placed to offer Marriage Coaching. In this, I have married (please excuse the pun) my qualifications as a Celebrant and Professional Coach to offer this service. The Extended DISC personality profile is used to enable couples to further understand done another and to identify topics for discussion and further exploration.
While I call this the ‘Defensive Driving’ of Marriage, being pro-active about your relationship as you declare your intention to change it from living together to being married (there is a difference, it is more than just a piece of paper) is the best move a couple can make. I am aware of stories where couples have ended their marriages early, as they could not agree on where they would live based on career pursuits or whether or not they would have children, for instance. A lot of heart-ache (and money) could have been saved had they worked through those issues before-hand.
